Delhi: Acres Of Land Cleared In Floodplain, Farmers Devastated

Crops Recently Delhi Development Authority was commanded to clear the crops near Yamuna floodplains by the orders given by  National Green Tribunal.DDA had to abide by the orders, prohibiting farming practices on riverine land.

Heera Lal was completely devastated as he surveyed the mess in front of him after his fully grown beetroot and other vegetables were destroyed. Lal told that the land was undertaken from his father's time around 1883. He has a portion of 45 bighas and grows seasonal crops to obtain extra profit. He told that no orders were being issued and no warnings were given to them. He also added that “ I have scrimped to save money and now a loss of 4 Lac has impacted his farm.”

As no issues were being regulated, those farmers especially those engaged in flowering were mostly been impacted. They had to suffer a great loss. Despite of ongoing cases in the court, it was very unfair as without any warning their crops have been distorted. Therefore DDA severely impacted their livelihood.

A farmer from Bela State near Rajghat told that if the government can not support agricultural engagement then they should provide alternative ways for providing employment opportunities. They should not leave the farmers moneyless and homeless.

DDA Section Officer Satish Kumar cleared in his statement that the court case only involved people's shanties not their agricultural land and produce. Infact this demolition was the result of NGT’S 2019 November order, which disallowed any farming practice in Yamuna Floodplain.

Heera Lal also told that neither they have been provided rehabilitation nor they are being listened to. He also told that they have been completely pushed to prove themselves as the actual land owner.

The people impacted by this drive had given their deposition to Lt. governor VK Saxena also.
