Deadline Extended for Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme after Technical Glitches

In response to mounting complaints from farmers in Maharashtra about technical glitches in the online registration process, the deadline for enrollment under the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme has been extended by three days. Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde announced the extension, which now sets the new registration deadline to Thursday, August 3, 2023.

Initially scheduled to conclude on Monday, July 31, the registration process faced numerous challenges, primarily centered around technical issues that hampered farmers' access to the online platform. The overwhelming response from farmers to enroll in the scheme was evident, with 1.50 crore farmers from Maharashtra already having registered by paying a nominal fee of just Rs 1.

In a positive development, over the last 24 hours, an impressive 7.20 lakh farmers successfully submitted their crop insurance forms. However, it was the persistent difficulties experienced in rural areas that prompted the state government to intervene and seek an extension from the Centre. The technical problems encountered included server downtimes and connectivity issues in certain locations.

Minister Dhananjay Munde emphasized the importance of ensuring that no farmer is deprived of the benefits of the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme due to these technical hurdles. In light of the situation, the state government promptly made the request to the Centre for an extension to allow ample time for all eligible farmers to complete the registration process.
