Dairy farmers poured around 150 litres of milk on the streets of Chennai on Sunday in protest of the current procurement prices offered by the Tamil Nadu government, threatening to gherao the local Aavin office if their demands were not met.

Milk producers emptied several cans of milk on the streets of Alandurai, on the outskirts of the city today, in an attempt to draw the government's attention to their demand for a higher procurement price.

This comes on the heels of many dairy farmers dumping milk on the streets of Salem and Erode in the state's western region.

Nadegounderpudur Agricultural Cooperative Bank producers, along with the district farmers union, raised slogans in support of their call for procurement prices of Rs 50 per litre, as well as cattle feed subsidies.

Farmers, including milk producers, were not getting the right price for their agricultural produce because of uncompetitive prices, according to Tamil Nadu Farmers Union local president Arumughasami.

He said that if the government does not raise the prices to Rs 50 per litre within a week, the producers will lay siege to the Aavin office in nearby Pachapalayam.

It has become difficult to rear cattle because Rs 250 must be spent per cow, resulting in a loss to farmers; even the state-run cooperative Aavin has stopped paying dividends and providing incentives to suppliers, despite the government of neighboring states paying Rs 48 per litre.
