Cyclone Biparjoy Triggers High Tides on Gujarat Coast; IMD Issues ‘Orange Alert’

The Gujarat coast of Saurashtra and Kutch regions has been placed on an 'Orange' alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The alert comes as the cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' is expected to cross the Jakhau Port in Gujarat by the evening of June 15 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been consistently sharing updates on the cyclonic storm currently advancing through the Arabian Sea. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic discussion with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel concerning the imminent arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy, assuring the state of all available assistance.

In a tweet, the IMD stated, "Cyclone Warning for Saurashtra and Kutch Coasts: Orange Message. VSCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today about 300km WSW of Porbandar, 290km SW of Devbhumi Dwarka, 340km SSW of Jakhau Port, 350km SSW of Naliya. To cross near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by the evening of 15th June as VSCS."

Biparjoy, the first storm of the year in the Arabian Sea, is currently forming over the east-central Arabian Sea. According to the daily cyclone advisory from the weather office, the cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of 7 kmph in the past six hours.

YELLOW ALERT for Mumbai

In anticipation of the cyclone's landfall, a yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai and Thane. The city of Mumbai experienced strong gusts of wind and high-tidal waves, accompanied by heavy pre-monsoon showers."

According to Sunil Kamble, the scientist and head of the Mumbai office and Regional Meteorological Centre for Western India, "Cyclone Biparjoy is currently positioned approximately 500-600 kilometers away from Mumbai."

Kamble stated that Mumbai will not experience any direct impact from the cyclone. The prevailing pre-monsoon showers and heightened wind speeds in the region are attributed to the influence of the cyclone, he explained.

Evacuation 

Amidst Cyclone Biparjoy, Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat's Kandla initiates evacuation of residents from low-lying areas to temporary shelters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds meeting to assess preparedness. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inspects coastal districts' readiness at State Emergency Operation Center. Kutch and Maharashtra's coast, including Mumbai, experience high tidal waves. Flight operations in Mumbai affected due to adverse weather conditions preceding the cyclone.

According to the Meteorological Department, as of Sunday night, the immensely powerful cyclonic storm was positioned approximately 540 km west of Mumbai, 360 km southwest of Porbandar, 400 km south-southwest of Devbhumi Dwarka, 490 km south-southwest of Naliya, and 660 km south of Karachi in Pakistan.
