Cyclone Alert: Low-Pressure Area Set to Strengthen into Mocha Today
According to the weather office, a weather system is anticipated to intensify and develop into a severe depression by Wednesday at 5.30 am.
As per the sources, a severe storm is currently developing in the southeastern Bay of Bengal and is predicted to strengthen into a cyclone today.
According to the Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, "The current low-pressure area is predicted to become more concentrated and develop into a depression by this evening and it is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm."
As per an official statement from IMD, the low-pressure area present over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea has now developed into a 'Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area' as of 9th May 2023 at 05:30 IST. This weather system will further intensify and transform into a depression by this evening in the same region. Subsequently, within the next 12 hours, it is expected to transform into Cyclone Mocha, with wind speeds ranging between 80-90 kmph and gusting up to 100 kmph.
Based on IMD reports, the weather system may move towards the northwest direction and gradually intensify into a cyclonic storm over the same area. It will then continue its movement towards the north-northwest and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by May 11th. By May 11th, it is expected to develop into a very severe cyclonic storm over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal. However, the storm is predicted to weaken by May 13th.

The weather office has issued a warning advising fishermen and operators of small ships, boats, and trawlers to avoid traveling into the southeastern and central regions of the Bay of Bengal.

In addition, those who are already present in the east-central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea are requested to return during the day.
According to the Meteorological Department's forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated regions over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from Tuesday to Thursday.
