CSIR Unveils India's First Compact Electric Tractor and Showcases Purple Revolution on Republic Day

In a proud moment for India's scientific community, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) showcased the 'purple revolution' and unveiled the country's first women-friendly compact electric tractor on the Republic Day tableau. The purple revolution, centred in the lavender fields of Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir, not only highlights India's scientific prowess but also celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of local farmers who have transformed into successful agri-entrepreneurs in recent years.

The enchanting tableau, adorned with lavender flowers, tells the story of the development of an elite variety of lavender at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Jammu. This unique variety is cultivated and processed to produce essential oils, perfumes, and incense sticks. Lavender, known for its soothing fragrance, has become a lucrative commodity with lavender oil selling for a minimum of Rs 10,000 per litre.

The Purple Revolution is a testament to the collaborative efforts of scientists and local farmers, fostering a new culture of agri-startups in India. Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh has frequently praised the initiative as an exemplary journey from the laboratory to the market, emphasizing its role in boosting the agricultural sector.
