A team of scientists from Junagadh Agriculture University has discovered a practical solution to the issue of agricultural residue burning, which is a major cause of environmental pollution.

This waste material, which is difficult for farmers to dispose of, can now be transformed into biochar, a versatile product with various applications across industries. JAU has created a machine that can efficiently convert this waste into biochar and has been granted a patent for this innovative technology.

Biochar is a substance similar to charcoal, which is produced from materials like wood and food waste. However, it is essential to verify the carbon content of the specific biochar being used.

JAU has developed a machine capable of producing biochar from the agricultural residue with a carbon content of 80%. This machine is capable of processing 500 kg of waste per hour.

JAU scientists have reported that in India, around 780 million metric tons of agricultural residue is produced from various crops such as wheat, cotton, castor, and sesame. Instead of being burned to ashes, this waste can be transformed into biochar, which has the potential to enhance farmers' earnings.

PM Chauhan, dept head of renewable energy engineering (REE) at JAU said, “We have developed a batch-type biomass pyrolyser machine. This produces biochar which has several agricultural and industrial applications. Farmers can use it for soil improvement, enhancing soil fertility, improving plant growth, and crop nutrition. The use of it with fertilizer improves the overall productivity of farming.”

Chauhan suggests that biochar, once activated through a scientific process, can have practical applications in various industries. One such application is in oral health care, where activated biochar can be used in products like toothpaste and teeth-whitening treatments. Additionally, it can be utilized in water purifiers and air filters, among other products.

Chauhan stated, “The biochar produced using this machine is free from greenhouse gas emission and it can be utilized for agriculture soil amendments, industrial application, and cosmetic production. This way the farmers won’t need to burn their agriculture waste which will reduce the pollution and help them earn additional income.”

According to officials from JAU, the patent for the machine will soon be transferred to appropriate entities to enable mass production for commercial purposes.
