In a move to promote environmentally friendly waste management through the Go Green initiative, flexible bio-gas units have been recently introduced in Udhagamandalam. With support from National Diary Development Board ( NDDB ) and Indian Immunologicals Limited's (IIL) corporate social responsibility efforts (CSR), the focus is on benefiting around 120 households, primarily women.

The inauguration of these bio-gas units was led by Meenesh Shah, Chairperson of NDDB and IIL, alongside K. Anand Kumar, Managing Director of IIL, P. Rajesh Kumar of Aavin, and M. Jayaraman, affiliated with the Nilgiris District Co-operative Milk Producers Union.

Approximately ₹112 lakhs have been earmarked for the project, facilitating the installation of adaptable two-cubic-meter bio-gas units across these 120 households. The subsequent stage will involve processing bio-slurry into organic solid and liquid fertilizers through a dedicated unit.

At its core, this initiative aims to provide cost-effective, eco-friendly cooking energy options for women farmers. Simultaneously, it promotes sustainable dairy farming by harnessing bio-slurry and associated organic fertilizers, thus curbing the use of chemical alternatives.

The initiative brings substantial advantages to women in eight villages in the Nilgiris region, specifically in Gudalur and Pandalur taluks. Women's participation is fully supported through grant-based assistance.
