Recently Department Of Fisheries has initiated a campaign that aims to promote fish farming ( pisciculture) and spread awareness in the farming community.

The fish farming practice is mainly targeted in lowland or wasteland areas under  Mukhyamantri Integrated Chaur Vikas Yojana (MICVY).

Apart from practicing fish farming in lowland areas within 1000 ha, it will not only generate job opportunities or encourage farmers but will also help in the conservation of groundwater.

Krishna Kanhaiya, District Forest Officer (DFO) said that the qualified farmers need to apply to the forest department showcasing their full details for developing their own ponds in the lowlands.

“Along with fish farming, the farmers will be able to undertake horticulture, agro-forestry, integrated plantations, and other related activities. It will provide additional employment opportunities to the farming community besides bringing positive socio-economic changes in their lives” he told in his statement.

The DFO also told that MICY's main goal is to enlarge and develop ponds and similar water bodies in the wasteland or lowland areas for fish farming.

The subsidy for the ponds might range from 30% to 70%, depending on the project models, he added.

A forest department official also told that if ponds are established properly, it will also attract migratory birds to visit those regions.
