In a significant development for West Bengal's agri sector, the Central government has disbursed a whopping Rs 6,466.58 crore to the state under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) income support scheme over the past five years. This financial assistance has directly benefited more than 51 lakh farmers in the state, marking a substantial stride towards bolstering the agricultural community.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that West Bengal farmers have not only availed the PM-KISAN payouts but have also tapped into the urea subsidy, with an impressive sum of Rs 6,176.79 crore allocated for the financial year 2022-23. This infusion of funds is poised to enhance agricultural productivity and support the livelihoods of farmers in the eastern state.

Furthermore, farmers in West Bengal have reaped the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, with claims amounting to about Rs 1,219 crore being disbursed. This crop insurance initiative underscores the government's commitment to safeguarding farmers from unforeseen losses due to crop failure, pests, or adverse weather conditions.

The officials also highlighted the successful implementation of the PM-Svanidhi microfinance initiative, where an impressive Rs 127.86 crore has been disbursed to over one lakh beneficiaries. This initiative, aimed at supporting street vendors, reflects the government's efforts to uplift the urban informal sector, ensuring financial inclusion and empowerment.

The announcement comes on the eve of a crucial meeting between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The timing of this revelation holds political significance, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre of financial blockade. The TMC has alleged delays in payments for essential rural programs like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM-AWAS), the housing-for-all initiative.
