B20 International Conference on Chemicals and Petrochemicals Held at New Delhi

New Delhi witnessed the B20 International Conference on 'Chemicals and Petrochemicals: Sustainable Transitions through Green Technologies and Digitalization,' organized by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals.

The conference served as a platform to discuss the pivotal role of the chemical and petrochemical sector in the growth of the Indian economy while exploring sustainable solutions through green technologies and digitalization.

The event saw the virtual presence of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, who highlighted the significance of the chemical and petrochemical industry in India's economic development. He emphasized the commitment of the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET) to provide skill training to approximately 1.2 lakh individuals annually, catering to the growing demand for skilled manpower in the sector.

Dr. Mandaviya also underlined the government's focus on digital economy, education, energy transitions, and environmental and climate sustainability as key priority areas.

Shri Bhagwanth Khuba, Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers and New & Renewable Energy, drew attention to the remarkable growth of the Indian economy over the past nine years, propelling it to become the world's fifth-largest economy from its previous tenth position.

He highlighted the World Bank's recognition of India as being better equipped to navigate global headwinds compared to other major emerging economies. Additionally, Shri Khuba shared that nine urea plants with a capacity of 12.7 lakh MT each have been established in the past nine years, paving the way for India's self-reliance in urea production.

The Secretary of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals emphasized the sector's deregulated and de-licensed status, except for environmental compliances.

He commended the private sector for its significant contributions to the industry's growth in the country. The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals has been actively working towards the goal of "Net Zero by 2070" and is focused on harnessing the sector's immense potential. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to create facilitative policies to attract green investments in the industry.

The conference featured deliberations on key topics, including sustainability in the chemicals and petrochemicals industry, pathways to achieve net-zero/sustainability, research and development, technology and digital transformation, and inclusive and adaptive skills for a sustainable ecosystem.

Over 500 delegates from India and overseas, including representatives from industry associations, federations, and government bodies of B20 nations, participated in the conference. Industry representatives from Germany, Mexico, Russia, Hungary, the USA, Belgium, Singapore, UAE, and South Korea also joined the event, showcasing the global significance of the conference.
