In an effort to encourage eco-friendly and efficient waste management at the household level, Assam has taken a significant step by actively promoting pipe composting among its rural communities during the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. This sustainable initiative aims to address the disposal of biodegradable waste while promoting environmental awareness and education.

The District Water and Sanitation Committee of Biswanath District in Assam has been a pioneer in advocating for pipe composting. This environmentally friendly method has been successfully implemented in schools, particularly for managing the biodegradable waste generated during midday meals.

Under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2023 programme, district officials installed two composting pipes at Chariali Majaliya ME School. This approach utilizes PVC pipes, measuring 8 to 10 inches in diameter and 1.25 meters in length, to convert organic waste into valuable compost.

The process involves burying the pipes vertically, leaving about 25-30 cm of them beneath the ground surface. Only biodegradable waste, such as leftover food, fruit and vegetable peels, flowers, dung, and agricultural waste, is deposited into these pipes. To facilitate decomposition, a mixture of cow dung and dry leaves, diluted with water, is added every two weeks. It's crucial to keep the pipes closed to prevent rainwater from entering. After approximately two months, the composted material can be retrieved by lifting the pipe.
