Assam Farmers Left Devasted After A Huge Crop Loss, Appeal To Govt For Support
The farmers in the district are appealing to the state government to help them during this difficult time. The Mayong area is flood-prone, and farmers face a lot of problems every year. With their crops destroyed, they are left without a source of income to repay their loans and support their families.
Farmers in Morigaon district, located in central Assam, have been left devastated after a massive hailstorm and rain destroyed their crops. Many farmers took loans from banks to cultivate watermelon, green chilli, and other crops but suffered massive losses as a result of the natural disaster.
Pranab Sarkar, a 35-year-old farmer, said that he had taken a loan of INR 2-3 lakh to cultivate watermelon on his 25 bighas of land but is now unable to repay the loan because of the crop loss. He added that his family's main income source is cultivation, and with 14 people in the family, they are facing massive problems.
Krishna Biswas, another farmer from the Mayong area, shared a similar story. He had taken a loan of INR 50,000 from the bank to cultivate green chilli, but the recent hailstorm and rain destroyed his crops. Like many other farmers in the district, he now has no idea how he will repay the loan amount. According to the district administration, crops on thousands of bighas of land have been affected due to the natural disaster.
