The state of Assam in India has officially declared 'Kaji Nemu' (Citrus limon) as its state fruit, showing the dedication towards promoting local produce. This tangy, oval-shaped lemon with light green, smooth skin has gained recognition for its unique aroma and antioxidant properties. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced the decision via his official social media account, expressing confidence that this move will propel Assam lemon onto the global fruit map, promoting self-dependency and increased production.

Significance of Kaji Nemu in Assam's Agricultural Terrain

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, delivering the news in the state Assembly, hailed the Cabinet's decision to designate 'Kaji Nemu' as Assam's state fruit. Bora also highlighted the government's focus on commercial plantation and export of Kaji Nemu, indicating that approximately 15.9 hectares of land are currently dedicated to its cultivation, producing around 1.58 metric tonnes. Over the past two years, this unique fruit has found its way to international markets, including the Middle East.

Geographical Indication (GI) Status and Distinct Properties

Kaji Nemu has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a recognition that ties the fruit's qualities and reputation to its specific geographical origin. The GI tag is proof to the lemon's authenticity and uniqueness. Beyond its geographical significance, Kaji Nemu stands out for its culinary and medicinal attributes. Known for its intensely sour flavor, it enhances a variety of dishes and is celebrated in traditional Assamese cuisine. Reports suggest that apart from its culinary appeal, Kaji Nemu is valued for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a cherished ingredient in Assamese households.
