In a bid to promote sustainable agricultural practices and mitigate the adverse effects of excessive fertilizer use, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently highlighted the importance of natural and organic farming. Speaking at the inauguration of the Natural Farming Conclave held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, the Chief Minister stressed the need for utilizing the region's potential for efficient agricultural practices.

The call for natural farming and organic practices in Assam comes as part of the state government's commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, ensuring the well-being of its people, and protecting the environment. By reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers and embracing natural farming techniques, Assam aims to enhance agricultural productivity while safeguarding public health

During his address, CM Sarma revealed that discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led to a renewed focus on increasing organic farming in Assam. Pointing out the potential benefits showcased in a recent documentary, he expressed confidence that if the land's potential is utilized effectively, there would be a reduced reliance on fertilizers such as Urea, Phosphate, and Nitrogen.

CM Sarma expressed concerns over the adverse health effects resulting from the use of harmful fertilizers, including an increase in heart and kidney diseases. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, he emphasized the significance of natural farming to mitigate the risks associated with excessive fertilizer use.

"We should use fertilizers, but excessive use can have detrimental effects on health. If natural farming can yield more produce from the same plot of land compared to conventional methods, then there is no alternative to embracing natural farming. We will work to remove Fertilizer Jihad," stated CM Sarma, urging farmers to consider organic practices.

Backing the Chief Minister's stance on natural farming, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat provided logical explanations on the health benefits and increased yields associated with natural farming methods. This endorsement further strengthens the argument for adopting sustainable practices in agriculture.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted the relevance of government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme) in assisting farmers in flood-prone regions like Assam. The scheme has provided financial assistance of Rs 236 crore to over 3 lakh farmers in the state over the last three seasons, offering vital support during periods of recurring floods.

As the state government continues its efforts to prioritize sustainable agriculture, stakeholders and farmers across Assam are encouraged to explore and adopt natural farming practices, ultimately leading to a healthier, more resilient agricultural sector.
