Assam- Agriculture Equipment Distribution and SRI Training Conducted at Tezpur Event

In an important step to boost sustainable and productive agriculture in Assam, the Sonitpur District Agriculture Department conducted a successful initiative at the Tezpur Majgaon Training Center. This initiative encompassed two crucial elements aimed at empowering local farmers and promoting rice production in the region.

Firstly, the department organized the distribution of essential agricultural equipment to farmers under the Horticulture Mission for North Eastern and Hilly States (HMNEH) and National Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) schemes. This intervention aimed to alleviate the financial burden on farmers and equip them with the necessary tools to enhance their agricultural operations. The distributed equipment included flour-crushing machines, solar bubble dryers, straw-cutting machines, grass-cutting machines, and tricycles.

The flour crushing machines and several other items were distributed free of charge, while tricycles were made available at a heavily subsidized rate. This distribution program provides an idea for the department's dedication to supporting the economic viability of local farmers.

Secondly, the initiative included a comprehensive training session on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). This methodology emphasizes resource efficiency and environmental protection while seeking to achieve increased rice yield.

The training session, led by Dr. Ranjit Bordoloi and other agricultural experts, focused on various key aspects of SRI, including the use of increased organic manure, planting young seedlings at wider spacings in a square pattern, employing intermittent irrigation to maintain optimal soil moisture, and engaging in frequent inter-cultivation for improved aeration and weed control. Therefore, by adopting the principles of SRI, farmers can potentially achieve higher crop yields while minimizing their environmental footprint, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

The presence of dignitaries like Joint Director of Agriculture (North Division) Bhabani Nath, District Agriculture Officer Pankaj Kumar Saikia, and Additional Director of Agriculture, Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury at the event highlights the significance of this initiative and the government's dedication to promoting the growth and development of the agricultural sector in Assam.
