To reduce the burden of electricity bills on farmers, the Agriculture Department is encouraging farmers in the State to embrace solar-powered agriculture pumps. The move comes as a response to the growing issue of power supply disconnection faced by farmers due to arrears in bill payments. The Agriculture Minister, P. Prasad, emphasized the importance of sensitizing farmers about the benefits of adopting solar-powered pump sets.

Farmers in the State have been grappling with the possibility of power supply disconnection, with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) threatening to cut off electricity due to outstanding bills. To address this challenge, the Agriculture Department has taken steps to educate farmers about the advantages of 'solarising' their agriculture pump sets.

Under an existing government scheme, electricity is provided free of charge to farmers, and the associated bills are covered by the Agriculture Department. However, unpaid bills have led to a precarious situation, prompting discussions between Agriculture Minister P. Prasad and Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty. The goal is to prevent the KSEB from resorting to disconnection of electricity supply to farmers.

To reassure the farming community, Minister Prasad has guaranteed that the supply of subsidised electricity will not be disrupted. To achieve this, the Agriculture Department is promoting the adoption of solar-powered pump sets as an alternative and sustainable solution. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's (MNRE) PM-KUSUM project, facilitated by the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT), has been launched in the State.

The PM-KUSUM project is a national-level initiative aimed at the 'solarisation' of existing agricultural pumps and replacing diesel generator-powered agricultural pump sets. By harnessing solar energy, farmers can reduce their dependence on traditional electricity sources and contribute to environmental conservation.

Solar-powered pump sets offer several advantages to farmers, including a significant reduction in electricity bills, increased energy efficiency, and a lower environmental impact. The Agriculture Department's efforts to create awareness about these benefits aim to empower farmers to make informed decisions about adopting sustainable agricultural practices.

The implementation of solar-powered agriculture pump sets aligns with broader efforts to promote renewable energy and sustainable farming practices. It not only addresses the immediate challenge of electricity bill payments but also positions farmers as key contributors to the country's renewable energy goals.

In conclusion, the Agriculture Department's proactive steps to promote solar-powered pump sets underscore a commitment to the well-being of farmers and the environment. By embracing sustainable practices, farmers in the State can look forward to a brighter and more energy-efficient future.
