On Sunday, the agriculture department of West Bengal distributed 13,554 units of farm machinery, such as combine harvesters, rice transplanters, tractors, and power tillers, to farmers in the East Bardhaman district. This initiative aimed to merge the gap between agriculture and technology.

According to officials, a program was held at the residential training center 'Matigantha' in the district where farm equipment was distributed among farmers. It was reported that 365 trainees completed the training program at Matigantha as of March 31.

According to officials, the government has provided farm equipment through its mechanization programs. These programs have established 77 agricultural machinery custom hiring centres with a subsidy of Rs 59.28 crore during 2022-23.

The equipment provided includes 47 combine harvesters, 102 tractors, 2,567 power tillers, 228 solar pump sets, 144 multi-crop threshers, 23 maize sheller/threshers, 12 rice transplanters, 1,249 rotavators, 690 power weeders, 39 potato diggers, 21 mini oil mills, and 180 mini rice mills.

According to Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, the Agriculture Minister of West Bengal, the process of farm mechanization in the state began after Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister. Before her tenure, there was a lack of skilled workers who could participate in the mechanization process. The workers who were brought in from Haryana and Punjab charged high rates, which resulted in the local workers losing out on their profits. To address this issue, Mamata Banerjee established a training center in Bengal. Currently, more than 150 people have completed the training and are now employed as trainers at the center.
