Deep in the heart of Odisha's Mayurbhanj District in India lies a vibrant community of tribal inhabitants, many of whom belong to the "Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups."

Historically, these indigenous communities have drawn their sustenance from forest resources and traditional cereal farming. However, the limitations of these age-old practices have left them grappling with the challenge of securing a sustainable livelihood.

One commendable community-driven endeavor in this landscape is the Sosonum Agro Farmer Producer Company (FPO). Comprised of 517 tribal farmers, including 59 resilient women, this FPO aspired to diversify their agricultural activities by venturing into the cultivation of aromatic crops, with a particular focus on lemongrass.

However, making inroads into the specialized market of lemongrass proved to be a formidable challenge, primarily due to the lack of established market connections and the requisite expertise.

Stepping up to offer vital support was Palladium, an accredited Cluster-based Business Organization (CBBO) sanctioned by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

Palladium embarked on a mission to provide comprehensive and sustainable solutions for over ten FPOs in Odisha. Through a collaborative effort, the Sosonum Agro FPO not only successfully embraced lemongrass cultivation but also attained mastery in the art of oil extraction, bottling, and packaging.

The Sosonum Agro initiative has had a far-reaching impact, transforming once-barren wetlands into productive fields of aromatic crops. In just two years since its formation and official registration, the FPO has achieved an annual turnover of 1 crore, resulting in a significant 40% increase in the income of its dedicated member farmers. The export of lemongrass products to international markets has not only promoted the self-assurance of FPO members but also ushered in a positive transformation in the socio-economic status of tribal farmers.
