Tractors, the backbone of Indian agriculture, play a pivotal role in saving labor, reducing time, and boosting crop yields. Serving as a versatile power source, tractors contribute to various agricultural operations, from field preparation to harvesting, making them a source of immense aid for rural households.

India holds the top spot as the global leader in tractor sales by volume, exceeding China's numbers by 2.5 times and outpacing the US by 3.5 times. The domestic sale of an impressive 9.5 lakh tractors in 2022-23 and a cumulative total of 4 million over the past five years highlights the essential role tractors play in India's agricultural sector.

Challenges in Farm Mechanization

Despite the significance of tractors, only 4.6% of farmers own them, causing delays and inefficiencies in farming tasks. Smallholders often resort to renting tractors or relying on human and animal power, impacting the entire crop value chain. To address these challenges and bring out emerging agricultural technologies, policymakers must consider reforms. While existing government support through schemes like Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAC) has been robust, continuous reforms are needed for sustained growth.

Therefore, to cope with the problem, the government has streamlined the certification process for new tractor models, reducing the number of tests from 17 to four at the Central Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institute in Budni, Madhya Pradesh. This facilitates the adoption of advanced technologies like precision farming and telematics.

Digital Technologies for Future Agriculture

Tractors should evolve into smart, flexible, and efficient machines aligned with digital technologies. Connectivity, precision farming, and telematics-based analytics should be integrated, addressing emerging trends such as crop rotation and horticultural farming.

The impending Bharat Stage TREM V emission standards pose challenges for tractor manufacturers, requiring investments in eco-friendly technologies. While this enhances environmental sustainability, it increases the cost of mechanization, affecting affordability for farmers.

Solutions for Smallholders

To enhance tractor utility, matching farm machinery tailored for different crops and landholding sizes is essential. The Make in India initiative can drive the development and adoption of reliable yet affordable non-tractor farm machinery.

India's farm mechanization industry is witnessing significant investments and collaborations for cutting-edge technologies. The government's support in discouraging low-quality machinery imports and ensuring timely subsidy disbursement is crucial for industry growth.
