Top METHODS To Grow Tasty Makhana Into the Farm

Makhana is one of the most consumed food globally. India is the top producer of Mkahana. Having immense health benefits, it has been eaten as dry fruit. In this article, we have discussed different ways to grow Makhana.

Makhana cultivation

Makhana is one of the most popular foods consumed in different parts of India. Makhana is mainly grown in Bihar with an overall production rate of 90%. A single makhana plant produces 80-100 seeds.

They are mostly grown on lands with loamy texture soil. They can be also grown in clean ponds, low-lying lands, reservoirs, and in farms.

Different methods for growing Makhana

Here are the following methods to cultivate Makhana:- 

Direct Seeding 

In this method usually, 30 - 90 Kg of seed is broadcasted manually into the field. It is usually done in the month of December. After a period of 35-40 days, the seeds are observed to be fully grown underwater.

After 2-2 ½ months the plant appears on the surface. Row-to-row and plant-to-plant distances are to be maintained.

Farm System

This technique has been invented by Makhana Research Centre. In this method, the field is filled with water up to 1 ft. Simultaneously other crops can be grown. This encourages farmers to gain more profits and within 4 months Makhan plant becomes fully cultivated.

Transplanting Method

Usually, Makhana is transplanted in the month of March to April. Flower appearance after 2 months of seed sowing.After 35-40 days when the seed matures and rips completely the fruits begin to burst thus detaching themselves and falling on the upper surface of the water. Therefore Makhana is being harvested in the month of September or October.

Makhana Nursery

To get good quality transplants, Makhana Nursery is being prepared. The field is deeply plowed two to three times. The land is fully prepared and all the necessary elements are given. Fertilizers are being supplied with an NPK  ratio of 100:60:40 kg /hectare.

Later the field is being filled with water up to a height of 1 ft. Therefore in this stagnant water, the seeds are sprinkled in the month of December. These transplants can be acquired by the month of March.
