Thomson Reuters group, one of the leading media sources of the world, launched RML (Reuters market light), the groundbreaking mobile service in India in October 2007. The object of this service was to solve the problem of lack of information flow faced by Indian farmers. India is primarily an agriculture-dependent country and more than 50 per cent of the population thrives on this sector.
Lack of Information on Market Intelligence
Lack of information on market intelligence, weather forecasting and a package of practices of crop cultivation forced the farmers to bear an undue loss of their product. A missing link existed between the timely dissemination of quality information to the ultimate clientele, the farmers, from various sources. Reuters'' initiative was to streamline this missing link, so that farmers would get pertinent information in the quickest possible time through the project RML. However, some analysts felt that the information provided by Reuters was more tailor-made and lacked reliability of data. Besides this, competition from other companies providing similar services, cover of limited crops and choice of few markets had become a hurdle for further development of the project. Since the price of the service was high, analysts wondered how successful it would be among the Indian farming community.
