Remarkable Woman Farmer Crafting Success with PASUMAI's 10+ Value-Added Products, Earns 10k Rs a Month
P. Bindu, an inspiring woman farmer, has created over 10 value-added items branded as PASUMAI, generating a monthly income of Rs 10,000.
In Theni district, P Bindu is a remarkable figure, akin to a heroine or a role model, whose innovative ideas have brought about a revolution in agriculture. Born into a farming family in Periyankulam, Bindu defied all odds to emerge as an excellent organic farmer.
Her journey towards innovative farming began five years ago when she started working on her husband's seven acres of land. Initially, they struggled to make ends meet, but Bindu's determination led her to adopt new techniques and transform agricultural produce into value-added products like pickles, vadagam, and jams, significantly boosting her family's income.
In 2017, Bindu decided to explore organic farming after realizing that conventional methods were not yielding the desired results. She sought guidance from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and underwent skill-based training on post-harvest processing and packaging of fruits and vegetables. This program, a part of the Agriculture Extension Scheme by the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management in Hyderabad, opened up a world of possibilities for her. It enabled her to create value-added products from locally available farm produce.
Under the brand name PASUMAI, Bindu has developed more than 10 value-added products, generating a monthly income of Rs 10,000. One of her notable innovations was intercropping tomatoes, brinjals, and other vegetables in a banana field. While banana trees typically take eight months to yield, her approach provided a consistent income stream within months. Guided by KVK, she optimized production techniques and devised effective marketing strategies.

Bindu is now working on scaling up production and establishing permanent shops in KVK and horticulture college premises to sell her produce. She has acquired knowledge about shelf-life enhancement techniques and various types of packaging materials and their uses. With the support of the marketing department, NABARD Rural Mart, and KVK, she aims to develop diverse marketing strategies that will expand her brand and income.
Beyond her success, Bindu advocates for organic farming as the president of the PASUMAI self-help group, providing support to fellow members. She serves as an inspiring example to other women in the community, demonstrating that financial independence and success are attainable goals.
Bindu's commitment to education extends to her daughters, whom she has prioritized in their pursuit of higher studies. In recognition of her significant contributions to agriculture and beyond, Bindu was awarded the 'Farmer Award' under SSEPERS ATMA in 2020-21 and was honored as the best woman farmer during an International Women's Day celebration. Her story sets an example of how determination with her unique innovation can create a positive impact on individuals and communities.
