Praveen Bhai Patel, once a conventional farmer struggling to make ends meet, is now a millionaire thriving in the world of moringa or drumstick cultivation. Praveen Bhai Patel, like many farmers in the Kheda district, relied on traditional methods to cultivate crops like castor, cotton, and chickpeas. Despite his hard work, the income from his land was barely enough to sustain his family. However, Praveen Bhai recognized the untapped potential in drumstick or moringa cultivation, driven by its high demand and nutritional value in Gujarat.

Turning Point:

In a journey to improve his livelihood, Praveen Bhai sought guidance from the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation Research Centre in Vasad. There, he expressed his interest in drumstick or moringa cultivation, a decision that would change his life forever. Under the mentorship of ICAR scientists, Praveen Bhai embarked on a journey towards prosperity.

Training and Guidance:

Equipped with scientific knowledge and technical skills, Praveen Bhai learned the intricacies of drumstick cultivation. From nursery raising to seed production, from stem cutting to pruning techniques, he absorbed every bit of expertise offered by the ICAR-IISWC experts. With their guidance, he adopted modern practices and innovative methods to maximize his yield and minimize input costs.

Implementation and Success:

Praveen Bhai wasted no time in putting his newfound knowledge into action. In 2008, 2016, and 2020, he planted thousands of drumstick plants using different methods, including seeds and stem cuttings. Today, his 10.7-hectare farm yields a staggering 100 tonnes of fresh drumstick pods annually, fetching him a handsome profit of Rs. 35/kg in various markets across the country.

Diversification and Value Addition:

But Praveen Bhai didn't stop at just selling drumstick pods. He saw potential in value-added products derived from drumsticks. With entrepreneurial zeal, he ventured into the production of drumstick powder and hair oil, tapping into the growing market for natural remedies. His products, priced competitively, found eager buyers, further boosting his income.

Praveen Bhai's entrepreneurial journey didn't end there. Recognizing the demand for quality seed material, he began selling drumstick seeds at premium rates. Additionally, he forged partnerships with companies like Thylakoid Biotech Private Limited, supplying them with drumstick kernels for various purposes. His business acumen and vision propelled him towards greater heights of success.

Impact and Empowerment:

Beyond personal prosperity, Praveen Bhai's success has had a ripple effect on his community. He provides stable employment to 15 laborers, uplifting their livelihoods. Moreover, he serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for fellow farmers, guiding them towards high-value horticulture crops. Thanks to his initiative, around 150 farmers have embraced modern agricultural practices, paving the way for a sustainable and profitable future.
