National Mission for Agriculture Extension and Technology (NMAET)

What is NMAET?

Through new institutional frameworks for technology transmission, the Scheme aims to make the extension system farmer-driven and farmer-accountable. It intends to restructure and develop an agricultural extension to make it possible to provide farmers with the right technology and better agronomic practices.

The degree of farm mechanization has always had a favorable impact on the rate of productivity in the agricultural industry. The large community, which consists of small and marginal farmers, must be involved in the process as well to increase farm mechanization and accelerate agricultural productivity. This would increase agricultural productivity and support the desired agricultural advancement.

However, expanding farming services and mechanization must come first. As a result, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its approval to the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET).

The NMAET and its different components are discussed in this article.

PURPOSE

The National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technologies (NMAET) seeks to reform and significantly develop an agricultural extension to improve farmers' agronomic practices and deliver relevant technology. To form Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs), the Mission is a carefully balanced combination of several factors, such as the following:

  • Interactive, Broad Physical Outreach for Information Dissemination
  • Technology Use for Information and Communication
  • Popularization of relevant and advanced technology
  • Building institutional strength and capability to support mechanization
  • The availability of good seeds
  • Plant Defense

OVERVIEW

During the 12th Plan Period, the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET) received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. Previously, the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation's many programmes divided up agricultural technologies and methods. To strengthen agricultural machinery and employ it for various synergistic interventions under the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), the Modified Extension Reforms Scheme was established in 2010. By combining the following programmes, the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET) has been created as a step towards this goal:

  •  Sub-Mission on Agricultural Extension
  •  Sub-Mission on Seed and Planting Material
  •  Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization.
  •  Sub-Mission on Plant Protection and Plant Quarantine.

For administrative ease, the NMAET has four different sub-missions; however, they are all connected. All of these sub-missions share a common theme which is extension and technology. Seeds, insecticides, and machines are the three most crucial agricultural inputs, and they must be distributed to every farmer via various effective extension machinery.

Expenditure for the 12th planning period

The Mission would cost a total of Rs. 13073.08 crore, of which Rs. 11390.68 crore will come from the Government of India and Rs. 1682.40 crore from the State.
