Agricultural tractors are essential machines in modern farming practices. These versatile vehicles are designed to provide power and traction for a variety of agricultural tasks. They have revolutionized farming by increasing productivity, and efficiency, and reducing manual labor. Tractors are made up of several essential parts that cooperate to carry out a variety of tasks. The tractor's power source, the engine produces the necessary horsepower to move the tractor and power any attached equipment. The tractor's gearbox mechanism offers fine control in various field situations by allowing the tractor to alter speed and direction.

Modern agricultural tractors are also equipped with advanced technologies, such as GPS navigation, precision farming systems, and telematics, which enhance efficiency and productivity while reducing environmental impact.

Here we have listed some tome parts of tractors that play an essential role to operate them on farms accordingly:-

Engine

One of the main components of the tractor is an engine, without this component a tractor is considered non-functional. This component converts fuel energy like diesel, gasoline, etc into mechanical motion which provided the tractor with enough energy to function.

The engine has internal combustion engines or IC engines where the combustion takes place inside the engine cylinder. An engine consists of pistons and cylinders accompanied by a horsepower ranging from 15 - 100 HP.

IC Combustion is categorized into two parts:-

  • Gasoline engine
  • Diesel Engine

Fuel System

The fuel delivery system in agricultural tractors ensures the efficient operation of the engine by storing fuel and delivering it directly to the engine through fuel injectors or indirectly using a carburetor. This system comprises essential components such as a fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, and either fuel injectors or a carburetor. Gasoline engines commonly employ carburetion, where the air and fuel are mixed before entering the cylinder, or port fuel injection, where fuel is injected near the intake valves just before the intake stroke. In contrast, diesel engines utilize direct fuel injection, where diesel fuel is injected under high pressure directly into the cylinder.

Drivetrain

It consists of an integrated group of components including:

  • Transmission
  • Axle
  • Driveshaft
  • Differential and wheels

Transmission

Contains an assembly of gears and their associated parts. Through this mechanical power is further transferred from the engine to the drive system. They allow for an increase in speed and torque.

Axle

The axle plays a crucial role in supporting the weight of the tractor and must be appropriately designed to withstand the demanding loading conditions it experiences. Additionally, the axle serves as a central shaft for rotating gears or wheels.

Driveshaft

They provide torque and rotation. They function by rotating themselves and power is transmitted forward to provide movement to the tractor.

Wheel

They are circular and consist hub and rim that revolves around the axle. This offers movement to the tractor placed on the ground.

Differential

The differential is a gear system that enables the drive wheels on the same axle of the tractor to rotate at varying speeds, particularly during turns. This functionality ensures smooth maneuverability. Additionally, the differential plays a crucial role in converting the axis of rotation, allowing the tractor to move effectively and efficiently.

Hitching System

They are mainly used for tractor-drawn implement attachment. They have a three-point hitch and a drawbar for functioning well.

Traction System

They are categorized into:-
  • Tracks
  • Tires
2WD - 2-Wheel Drive
All of the driving force is supplied by two rear wheels.
MFWD- Real wheel drive with front wheel assist 
The front wheels assist the rear wheels providing additional traction to the tractor.
4 WDAS-4 wheel drive with articulated steering
The driving force is provided by all 4 tires.
T- tracks
Track base systems facilitate drive force. Some tractors provide one track system on both sides and some provide two track systems.

Braking System

In any moving vehicle, having a reliable mechanism for stopping is of utmost importance. This is where the braking system plays a critical role. The braking system offers various options, including dry discs or oil-immersed brakes. Moreover, for optimal field performance, the tractor's brakes must operate effectively.

PTO

Power - Take off is an important equipment
They are of the following types:-
  • Hydraulic
  • Pneumatic
  • Mechanical
The Power Take-Off (PTO) system enables the transfer of power from a primary energy source, such as an engine, to additional equipment that lacks its engine or motor. It serves as a versatile mechanism with various applications. For instance, a tractor's engine can power a jackhammer through the PTO. PTO systems find wide usage in farming equipment, trucks, and commercial vehicles.
By harnessing energy that would otherwise go to waste, the PTO system effectively redirects it to power other devices or machinery. This capability allows the PTO to fulfill a range of vital functions. For instance, when towing an object without an attached engine, the object would struggle to move significant distances. However, with the aid of a PTO, the engine's power can be utilized to overcome this limitation.
PTO Shaft on the tractor transmits power from the tractor's engine to PTO-driven machines or attachments.
