Yeast is a popular organism known for its major role in fermented products. It has accompanied humans for millennia and is used in fermented foods too.

There are several strands of yeast out of which some has been used for bread making, some has been used for alcohol fermentation, some have also been used for medicinal purpose, and many more.

The process of fermenting carbohydrates into alcohols and carbon dioxide, which results in bubbles in the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages and tiny holes in the risen dough when baked, is facilitated by yeasts. 

But with extreme research and tests now this nutritive yeast can also be used in gardens which will nurture the soil and provide the best output from it. This yeast won’t only supply nutrients but will colonize all the essential and productive yeast cells in the roots that will offer major protection against harmful organisms.

Preparation of Yeast Based Fertilizer

For producing this fermented fertilizer following steps can be followed:-

  • A vessel is required with 3 gallons capacity.
  • 1 ounce (oz) of dry yeast to be mixed with 1 cup of sugar. Add  ½ - ¾ cup of lukewarm water.
  • After one to two hours, the mixture is diluted with 2 ½ gallons of warm water. The water can be previously used rainwater, water used for steaming vegetables, etc.
  • In case of unfermented fertilizer preparation, mix 1 ounce of dry yeast with 2 ½  gallons of warm water. This mixture should be settled within one hour.

Application Strategies

This fertilizer is applicable to plants like tomatoes, cucumbers,s, and strawberries. For successful results, the yeast-based fertilizer to first applied during a plant's seedling stage. The second application is to be practiced during the flowering stage and the third application is to be performed after the fruit appearance. To obtain better results it has been recommended The application of this fertilizer be conducted only three times.
