Integrated Organic Farming System

For the benefit of farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare developed the Integrated Organic Farming System (IOFS). IOFS is a model that consists of providing crops, cropping systems, and one acre of land. The model was created as part of the scheme All India Network Program on Organic Farming (AL-NPOF). The program was developed by the Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research and will be used in various Indian states.

Organic Farming is Required

Organic farming is a comprehensive approach to increasing productivity in a sustainable manner. Organic farming is not a new concept in India. However, with the advent of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, organic farming began to fade. The use of synthetic farming methods resulted in a large number of food grains but a decrease in soil health. Organic farming methods should be used instead of synthetic methods to create long-term soil fertility.

The organic farming method can be used to increase crop fertility. Farmers will benefit from this farming method as well, as it will bring them a higher price for their crops. Organic produce will also assist farmers in obtaining international prices that are up to 200% in their favor. The GoI, through IOFS, provides opportunities for Indian states based on production needs. The IOFS is particularly useful for the country's North Eastern states.

Organic farming's scope

Organic farming practices serve as a substitute for pesticides, growth regulators, and synthetic fertilizers. It has aided farmers by introducing new soil health measures. It also aids in the reduction of diseases caused by the artificial production of Fruits and vegetables

The production of a large number of organic products has the potential to increase soil fertility and create more fertile lands for farming. The soil's fertility will be maintained by returning all nutrients through composts. This will increase soil fertility and produce natural nutrients for the growing plant.

Pest and disease management in organic farming methods will help to reduce the use of pesticides in crop production.

The following practices must be followed in organic farming:

  • Crop rotation, mixed croppings, such as rice and pulses, soybean and ginger, maize, beans, and other crops.
  • Soil fertility is increased by manuring it with organic composts.
  • Disease-resistant crops must be chosen for planting prior to crop selection.
  • For biological control methods, naturally occurring plant and mineral extracts should be used.
  • Different regions in India have different opportunities for the green revolution via integrated organic farming methods.
