In the wake of escalating onion prices, there's a silver lining for onion farmers as the state government announces a generous onion subsidy amounting to Rs 300 crore, benefiting a total of three lakh farmers.

This subsidy program is specifically designed to assist farmers who sold their onion produce at lower rates between February 1st and March 31, 2023. However, many farmers are disagreeing across the state following the imposition of a 40 % export duty on onions by the Central Government.

In response to these concerns and to appease the farming community, the state government has taken the proactive step of providing subsidies for onion cultivation. This article sheds light on subsidy amount, eligibility criteria, and required documents for availing subsidy benefits on onion cultivation.

Subsidy Amount on Onion Cultivation

In a significant move, farmers will receive a subsidy of Rs 350 per quintal for onions sold between February 1 and March 31, 2023. After an eight-month interval, the state government is now focusing on this initiative. The initial phase of distributing onion relief subsidies has commenced, benefiting farmers.

Eligible Farmers to Receive Onion Subsidy

  • As of now, only farmers in Maharashtra are eligible to benefit from the onion subsidy program, as the state government has taken the initiative to provide this financial support to them.
  • In the initial phase of implementation, the subsidy will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of eligible farmers residing in districts such as Nagpur, Ramgarh, Sangli, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Akola, Jalna, Satara, Sangli, Chandrapur, Wardha, Latur, Thane, Amravati, and Washim.
  • Subsequently, the subsidy amount will be extended to farmers in the remaining districts of Maharashtra during the second phase of the program. This phased approach ensures a systematic distribution of subsidies to all eligible farmers across the state.

Eligibility Criteria for Onion Subsidy

To avail of the onion subsidy, certain conditions have been established, and farmers who meet these criteria will be eligible to benefit from this support. Here are the conditions in detail:-

Ownership Rights: Farmers must possess ownership rights to the land where onion cultivation takes place. This condition ensures that only legitimate landowners receive the subsidy.

Sale Receipt: This document serves as proof of the sale of onions, validating the farmer's eligibility for the subsidy.

E-Crop Registration or E-Para Report: Farmers are mandated to have either an e-crop registration or an e-para report. These documents serve as evidence of crop sowing and cultivation. They are crucial in demonstrating that the farmer has indeed cultivated onions during the specified period.

It is anticipated that the state government may consider granting some relaxation to accommodate the needs of farmers, ensuring that the subsidy reaches a broader spectrum of beneficiaries.
