In the heartland of Punjab, Gurwinder Singh Sohi made a life-changing decision in 2008. Breaking away from his family's generations-old tradition of wheat and rice farming, he ventured into the world of floriculture. His goal was to leverage Punjab's favourable climate to benefit struggling farmers who found it challenging to earn a decent income from traditional crops. A Vision for Change
Gurwinder's choice to switch to floriculture was motivated by his observation that despite the relentless hard work farmers put into wheat and rice cultivation, their income often fell short. He saw an opportunity in floriculture, where the potential for income was two to three times higher than traditional farming. Additionally, Punjab's climate, characterized by sandy loam soil and optimal water conditions, provided the ideal environment for growing a wide variety of flowers. Gurwinder was determined to be a pioneer in his district, Fatehgarh Sahib.
Cultivating Exotic Blooms
Over the years, Gurwinder transformed his village, Nanowal, into a hub for exotic flowers. With dedication and hard work, he succeeded in cultivating 40 varieties of exotic flowers, including California poppy, gladiolus, calendula, alyssum, chrysanthemum, daisy, delphinium, lupin, and salvia. His 22 acres of land became a mesmerizing tapestry of vibrant blooms, with an annual production of approximately 10 tonnes of flowers during the five-month blooming season. This flourishing endeavor allowed him to earn an impressive income of Rs 1 lakh per acre.

A Journey of Discovery
Gurwinder's journey to success was not without its share of challenges. Prior to venturing into floriculture, he explored various professions, including sales, trading tea leaves, mushroom and poultry farming, and even selling sweets and customizing jeeps. However, none of these endeavors ignited his passion, and he often changed professions after just a few years. It was only in 2008 that he found his true calling in floriculture.
The Turning Point
In 2008, Gurwinder learned about the Punjab Horticulture Department's offer of subsidized seeds for Holland gladiolus flowers. This discovery marked a turning point in his life. Despite initial skepticism and his father's reservations, he planted 10,000 bulbs of Holland gladiolus flowers. When they began to bloom after 90 days, Gurwinder's determination and ambition soared. This initial success encouraged him to expand his flower cultivation to one acre, setting the stage for even greater achievements.
Innovative Solutions
Gurwinder's success story isn't just about embracing a new path; it's also about innovation. He realized that efficient planting methods were crucial to scaling up flower farming. While many believed that machines couldn't replicate the precision of manual planting, Gurwinder saw an opportunity. He designed a unique planting machine that not only reduced labor costs but also significantly improved efficiency. With the help of a Rs 12 lakh grant from Punjab Agriculture University, he developed this machine, revolutionizing the flower farming process.
Sharing Success with Others
Gurwinder's success extended beyond his own farm. He generously shared his knowledge and innovations with fellow farmers, selling his machines to those in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Moreover, he provided free training to over 2,000 farmers from various parts of India, encouraging them to embrace floriculture and increase their income. Gurwinder's dedication to helping others find success in floriculture has had a far-reaching impact.
