The government is rolling out new initiatives to boost the earnings of both farmers and livestock keepers. Many farmers across the nation engage in animal husbandry alongside traditional farming. Recently government has introduced a subsidy program to support farmers in procuring cows, thereby boosting their income through animal husbandry.

The state government's objective is to encourage farmers to combine animal husbandry with farming practices, ultimately expanding the overall income. One significant avenue for income augmentation is the sale of milk from dairy animals. Farmers or individuals who are looking for even greater profits, establishing a small dairy or scaling up to a larger one, producing dairy products like curd, buttermilk, and paneer, can yield substantial returns.

About Mukhyamantri Swadshi Gausvardhan Yojana

The state government has launched the Chief Minister's Indigenous Cow Welfare Scheme (Mukhyamantri Swadshi Gausvardhan Yojana) as part of the Nandbaba Milk Mission. The scheme comes with specific guidelines. As per these guidelines, farmers will be eligible for subsidies on expenses such as transportation, transit insurance, and animal insurance if they purchase cows of the Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Gir, or hybrid breeds from other states. This subsidy will be applicable to a maximum of two cows and can go up to a maximum of Rs 80,000 for cattle rearers.

The scheme places priority on specific beneficiaries. When the department acquires two indigenous breed cows, the total expenditure on all associated items is capped at Rs 2 lakh. From this amount, a subsidy of 40 percent, a maximum of Rs 80,000, will be granted. This initiative particularly prioritizes 50 percent of women involved in milk production and cattle rearing, ensuring their active participation and benefit.

Conditions for Availing of the Scheme

Adequate Space for Cow Rearing: Beneficiary farmers and animal husbandry participants must ensure they have sufficient space for the proper rearing of cows. This condition emphasizes the importance of providing a suitable environment for the well-being of the animals.

Limit on Indigenous Improved Breed Cows: Beneficiaries should not already possess more than two indigenous improved breed cows. This limitation is in place to ensure that the scheme benefits those who genuinely require support for expanding their cattle-rearing activities.

Procurement of Cows from Other States: Farmers intending to purchase improved breeds of indigenous cows from other states must obtain a permission letter from the Chief Development Officer. This step is essential to regulate the procurement process and ensure adherence to the scheme's guidelines.

Special Incentives for Dairy Farmers

Dairy farmers have a unique opportunity under this scheme, as they are eligible for additional incentives:-

The incentive for Indigenous Cow Rearing: Dairy farmers who rear indigenous breeds such as Sahiwal, Gir, Gangatiri, and Tharparkar cows can avail themselves of incentives under the Chief Minister Progressive Animal Husbandry Promotion Scheme. The amount of this incentive ranges from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000, depending on the quantity of milk produced. This incentive is designed to encourage the rearing of indigenous cow breeds known for their milk production.

Overall Benefit: The scheme aims to not only support the purchase of cows from other states but also to incentivize the sustainable rearing of indigenous cows. By offering financial incentives to dairy farmers, the government aims to promote the growth of the dairy sector, improve milk production, and enhance the income of farmers engaged in dairy farming.

Incentives Based on Milk Production

Under the Mukhyamantri Progressive Animal Husbandry Promotion Yojana UP (Mukhyamantree Progressive Animal Husbandry Promotion Yojana, UP), dairy farmers are encouraged to rear indigenous breeds such as Sahiwal, Gir, Gangatiri, Tharparkar, and Haryana cows. The incentives provided under this scheme are categorized based on milk production, with two tiers:-

Tier One Incentive: Dairy farmers will receive an incentive amount of Rs 10,000 if their Sahiwal, Gir, or Tharparkar cows yield a daily milk production ranging from 8 to 12 liters.

Tier Two Incentive: A higher incentive amount of Rs 15,000 will be granted to cattle rearers for cows producing more than 12 liters of milk daily. Similarly, for Haryana cows, those yielding between 6 to 10 liters of milk per day will receive Rs 10,000, and if their milk production surpasses this range, they will be entitled to an incentive of Rs 15,000. Furthermore, for Gangathiri breed cows, those yielding 6 to 8 liters of milk per day will receive Rs 10,000 as an incentive, and those exceeding 8 liters of daily milk production will be eligible for Rs 15,000 in incentives.
