Pearl farming, also known as pearl cultivation, is the process of producing pearls by promoting the growth of pearl oysters or mussels in a controlled environment. Over time, layers of nacre build up around the nucleus, resulting in the formation of a pearl.

In India, there are two types of pearl farming: marine pearl farming and freshwater pearl farming.

Marine pearl farming involves the cultivation of saltwater pearl oysters, such as Pinctada fucata and Pinctada maxima, in coastal waters or estuaries. The process of marine pearl farming involves collecting wild oysters, inserting a nucleus or a piece of tissue into the oyster, and then returning the oyster to the water to grow. After a period of 2-3 years, the oysters are harvested, and the pearls are extracted, cleaned, and graded.

Freshwater pearl farming involves the cultivation of freshwater mussels, such as Hyriopsis cumingii, in freshwater ponds or lakes. The process of freshwater pearl farming involves collecting wild mussels, inserting a piece of tissue into the mussel, and then placing the mussel in a freshwater environment to grow. After a period of 2-3 years, the mussels are harvested, and the pearls are extracted, cleaned, and graded.

The process of pearl farming requires careful attention and expertise at every stage, from selecting suitable sites for farming to harvesting and grading the pearls. The success of a pearl farm depends on several factors, including water quality, temperature, and the health of the oysters or mussels. Pearl farmers must also be skilled at inserting nuclei or pieces of tissue into the oysters or mussels to promote pearl growth.

In recent years, pearl farming has gained popularity in India, with the government promoting it as a sustainable source of income for farmers. The government has set up several programs aimed at providing training and financial assistance to those interested in starting pearl farms, which has helped to promote the growth of the industry in India.
