Biotechnology-Its Endeavor Applications And Benefits In Agriculture

Biotechnology in agriculture has played a great role in providing enhanced production and top-quality crops. In this article, we have discussed what is biotechnology and its role in agriculture.

Role Of Biotechnology

Agriculture Biotechnology is the application of using tools or equipment which can modify organisms, can alter the gene of plants for gaining more productivity. Through modern biotechnology which includes the use of genetic engineering one can get massive benefits in the field of agriculture.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology has provided farmers with easy management, less care, and product way cheaper during farming. For instance, through biotechnology, GMOs or Genetic Modified organisms can help to kill the targeted pest that infests or feed on them. We have Bt cotton or Bacillus thuringiensis Cotton which is a modified plant resistant to cotton bollworms. Some biotechnology-applied crops are engineered to tolerate themselves from different herbicides, compete with weeds, etc.

Following are the different roles of biotechnology in Agriculture:-

Enhanced Crop Protection

Through the application of biotechnology, farmers can achieve enhanced production in their fields. GMO crops provide better and cost-effective solutions to farmers related to pest problems. A GMO crop will be able to resist pest infestations, prevent several plant diseases and instead provide enhanced production on farms.

Tolerance to Chemical Treatments

Since farmers have a greater dependency on chemicals for controlling the yield, therefore the use of different chemicals can decrease the quality of crops, leading to soil erosion, and many more. Application of herbicides and fungicides may destroy the yields, therefore through biotechnology plants are engineered in such a way that they can tolerate these levels of chemical treatment, can easily grow, and provide healthy crops to the farmers.

Increasing Nutritional value

Through biotechnology, it is now possible to grow crops that will easily provide high nutritional value beneficial for farmers and humans. For instance, now using this modified technology farmers can grow and obtain crops like soybean with high protein content, can obtain beans with high levels of amino acids or potatoes with high content of starch.

Resistance to Diseases

Through Gene Modified plants one can obtain products that can easily grow even in harsh conditions. There are several viral infections caused by insects or the emergence of diseases that can destroy the whole yield, therefore these modified crops can prevent themselves from these external factors. Also if we highlight human health it would be a great concern if insecticides are used, and pesticide treatments are performed on plants, they may lead to cancer or other health issues. Therefore these plants are engineered in such a way that they are disease-resistant and easy-growing plants.

Obtain fresh quality and better taste

Through genetically modified plants we can easily obtain nutritive and high-value protein-content plants. Moreover, they maintain their fresh quality, texture, and taste.
