Best Maintenance Tips
Check tyre pressure regularly
Operating the tyres at the correct pressure is possibly the most critical part of tractor tyre maintenance. The ride will be uncomfortable on hard surfaces with shocks transferred more harshly to the tractor itself, while in the field at too high a pressure. And low pressures can damage the tractor tire sidewall, causing cracking of the carcase and impacting handling when travelling at a high speed on the road. Therefore, pressure checks should be the main part of regular maintenance, particularly if the tractor has not worked for a while. If the tractor is parked for a considerable length of time, start it routinely and move it forwards or backwards to prevent flat spots.
Observe the pattern and level of tractor’s tyre wear
If the front tyres are wearing unevenly across their tread, this is likely to have been sustained during road travel. Swapping the tyres from one side to the another will help even out the wear. You can also consult your tractor’s operator’s manual and adjust the tracking as instructed. If the tractor is regularly used for work with a front implement or if often fitted with front weights, front tractor tyre wear will be increased. Remove the weights when not required.
Examine the carcase for damage
An important part of daily maintenance is checking each tractor tire for cuts, splits and wear. Check both sidewalls of the tyres and check the areas between each lug. You should examine any puncture material such as flints, stones, or metal items already embedded in the tyre carcase. Assess how deeply the object is in it before deciding if it can be removed safely or not. If you cannot do that discuss it with your agricultural tractor tyre specialist for advice.
Check the tyre’s rim condition
If the tractor is used on potholed roads or works in challenging terrain conditions, it can damage the wheel rims with serious consequences where the tyre meets the rim. Check regularly for signs of damage and the wheel centres for damage caused by repeated impacts. Clean the wheels after completing farming tasks in wet or dusty conditions to prevent rust formation.
Keep the tyre nuts tight
The wheel nuts should be checked regularly for tightness. It can be done using a torque wrench to ensure the correct torque level required in tightening each nut. Also, check the opposing nuts to ensure the wheels are secured in alignment. Loose wheel nuts can cause accidents, particularly at speed and can also cause wheel damage slowly. Consider servicing wheel nut security indicators and lightly greasing the threads on both nuts and studs.
Ensure mounted implements are lowered when parked
Always, ensure that mounted implements are on the ground when the tractor is parked. It will minimize unrequired pressure on your tractor’s tires and do the same with a front loader. Following these maintenance tips will ensure to get the maximum performance from your tractor tyres.
