Balinese Salt- Know All About its Extraction, Techniques being Used

Balinese sea salt isn't produced using the standard solar evaporation process. Sea water is held on coconut wood after being drip-filtered in brined sand. After that, the product is further dried in a greenhouse to produce clean, tiny crystals.

Extraction process:

Balinese salt is extracted from the sea using a traditional method that has been passed down through generations. The process involves evaporating seawater to leave behind salt crystals. The seawater is collected in large shallow pans and then left to evaporate under the sun for several days. During this time, the salt crystals start to form on the surface of the water.

Once the crystals have formed, they are harvested using a small scoop or spatula. The crystals are then rinsed with fresh water to remove any impurities and dried in the sun. The final step involves sifting the salt to remove any remaining impurities before it is packaged for sale.

Techniques used:

The technique used to extract Balinese salt is known as solar evaporation. This technique involves using the sun's heat to evaporate seawater and leave behind salt crystals. This method is environmentally friendly and does not require any energy sources other than the sun.

Hand Harvesting

Another technique used in the production of Balinese salt is hand-harvesting. This involves using small scoops or spatulas to harvest the salt crystals from the surface of the water. Hand-harvesting is a time-consuming process, but it allows for greater control over the quality of the salt.

 

Significance in Balinese cuisine:

Balinese salt is an important ingredient in Balinese cuisine and is used in many traditional dishes. It is known for its unique flavor and texture, which is slightly sweeter than regular sea salt.

In addition to its use in cooking, Balinese salt is also used in traditional Balinese ceremonies. It is often used as an offering to the gods and is believed to have purifying properties.
