This shift occurs from traditional technology to modern technology. Agriculture needs to be upgraded for this process to succeed.

Therefore, agricultural production can be viewed as a first stage or growth engine that leads to higher wealth for a nation. It is interesting to note that historically, few developing nations have successfully decreased poverty solely through agriculture, albeit practically none have done so without first raising agricultural productivity.
