180 Years Of Farm Mechanization Legacy- McCormick Deering Revolution

The farm in Raphine, Virginia, known as McCormick Farm, is where Cyrus Hall McCormick founded the McCormick Deering Company in 1831, revolutionizing agriculture with the first mechanical reaper.

Outstripping the demand for farm machinery production, the two most successful harvester companies, McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. and Deering Harvester Co., engaged in a no-holds-barred competition known as the "Harvester Wars" between the 1880s and 1902.
When financier J.P. Morgan facilitated the merger of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company in 1902, the first major global agricultural machinery group was formed: the International Harvester Company (IH).

Some farmers benefited from highly favorable purchase terms, lavish dinners, and preferential treatment from competing companies. However, the competing manufacturers were unable to maintain their marketing expenditures. When selling expenses exceeded 40% of total sales, J. P. Morgan's bank facilitated a merger of the five largest companies (McCormick, Deering and Milwaukee, Piano Mfg., and Warder, Bushnell & Glessner [Champion harvesters] - forming International Harvester Co.

For many years following the merger, IHC sold two parallel lines of equipment, McCormick and Deering, each slightly different from the other but bearing the IHC logo. Later on, in 1912, the US government filed an antitrust suit against IHC, and the case dragged on until a consent decree was signed in 1918. One of the terms of the agreement required IHC to have only one dealer in each town, which meant that the dual McCormick and Deering equipment lines could no longer be supported.

All of IHC's other farm implements quickly followed suit, giving birth to the famous McCormick-Deering line. The brand survived the Great Depression until around 1948/1948 when the name Deering was dropped. IHC replaced "McCormick-Deering" with "International" in the 1960s. Tenneco Inc. purchased the farm equipment division in 1984.
